The Decline of LinkedIn

24.07.2025

An observation: LinkedIn is currently eating itself.

With members’ feeds awash with AI or 'influencer' generated clickbait, it’s becoming increasingly hard to cut out the noise, and use the platform for what the majority access it for.

The company describes itself as: 'LinkedIn is the world's largest professional network on the internet. You can use LinkedIn to find the right job or internship, connect and strengthen professional relationships, and learn the skills you need to succeed in your career.'

The above doesn’t match what appears in my feed these days - from either a recruitment or business skills perspective. I'm even struggling to find the latest Indirect Tax news which is what I’m usually on the site for!

We've noticed a massive drop off in LinkedIn engagement from the Indirect Tax population over the last 6 to 12 months....my sense is that Indirect Tax people are deserting the site or accessing it increasingly infrequently.

Where does that leave recruitment? In Indirect Tax circles, direct sourcing efforts to hire via the platform are coming up with increasingly limited results. We’ve already seen it round here at BLT Recruitment – the move back to the days of personalised and consultative hiring via specialised recruiters who know the right people for the right jobs. What’s often left on LinkedIn are stale roles that seem to have been advertised for ages, being marketed to increasingly empty air space.

To recruit humans, use humans. Do drop Emma or I a note to vat@blt.co.uk or customs@blt.co.uk and we’ll give you the Indirect Tax recruitment advice and results you need.
