SENIOR VAT ANALYST, Surrey, UK or Amsterdam, Netherlands – to £50,000 + bens

A great opportunity to join the Indirect Tax team with this global brand.  It’s a varied role encompassing VAT advisory, compliance and systems work.

Key responsibilities will include:

  •  Responsible for reviewing all VAT returns across Europe from third party outsource business provider  whilst minimising potential VAT liability.
  •  Provide approval for all VAT compliance reports (VAT returns, EC sales lists, Intrastats) to third party business provider to ensure VAT return deadlines and compliance with VAT SOX processes.
  •  Manage the relationship with third party outsource provider to ensure that all compliance deadlines are met.  Look for continuous improvement in the process.
  •  Provide effective VAT advice to colleagues in the business on VAT implications for business flows, structuring and other issues as required.
  •  Identify, test and implement efficiencies in the system to minimise VAT costs to the business. Provide testing support to new projects in SAP.
  •  Deliver training to business divisions, according to need; to ensure reporting information flowing to VAT team is as accurate as possible.
  •  Raise awareness of the importance and relevance of VAT within the business.
  •  Take responsibility in assisting the European VAT team meet ongoing objectives of compliance, risk management and VAT efficiencies.

A newly created role with this major retailer to ensure that the business is ‘Brexit ready’ and fully compliant with any and all customs obligations once the UK leaves the EU.


  • Identify and map current Customs process for third country importations
  • Assess the suitability of this process and enhance where necessary
  • Submission of claim for overpaid duty in respect of past imports from HK/CN
  • Identify and map the supply chain for goods and assess the impact of Brexit on this Supply Chain
  • Prepare the business for a ‘hard border’ with the EU, including but not limited to:
    • classifying all products for customs purposes
    • Assessing the impact of Brexit on the ROI supply chain and international eCommerce
    • establishing a robust process for future completion of import and export declarations, working with supply chain, logistics and import agent, utilising IT where appropriate to establish a robust audit trail
    • Mitigation of any supply chain impact (at the border)
    • Working with Tax, Finance and Legal to minimise the VAT and duty impact of Brexit
  • Assisting with all other Customs and import/export matters


  • In-depth experience gained working within the field of Customs matters
  • Direct experience in classifying a broad spectrum of goods for Customs purposes
  • Experience in mapping and enhancing customs processes
  • Relevant customs qualification/accreditation
  • Must be a self-starter who is able to drive change within the business
